Humor Hubris

While reading MN Politics Guru's exchange with Powerline, and a more family-friendly Hindrocket take on Gannongate... I noticed an interesting little post:
In his transformation from comedian to pundit, Al Franken has maintained the humorlessness that distinguished his show business career after the expiration of the Al Franken decade. In his capacity as a pundit, Franken has added the element of demagogy on a variety of subjects. Now he peddles the party line like a good left-wing apparatchik.

I totally agree. And so do millions of other Americans. We agree so much that we put five of his books on the NY Times Bestseller list. And the Grammy's agree too. They agree so much that they gave him a Best Comedy Album of 2005 nomination for his "The O'Franken Factor Factor" CD. I know what you are thinking... "he was only nominated." Well get this, he has been nominated four other times as well. And wouldn't you know it... he was so unfunny that he won... twice! Both "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot" and "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them" were awarded Grammies for Best Comedy Album.

Actually, I just finished watching "SNL's First Five Years" on NBC. I always forget how unfunny those years, in which Al Franken was a writer, were. They were so humorless that he won five Emmy awards.

And we shouldn't overlook his Emmy nomination for Comedy Central's "Politically Incorrect" with Arianna Huffington.

The USO knows how unfunny Franken is. They actually invited him to entertain troops fighting in Iraq.

I wish I was so humorless. Then I could make millions of dollars being unfunny too.

And this line is so precious that I must point it out once more:
Now he peddles the party line like a good left-wing apparatchik.

I'm not quite sure if this is a snide snarky attack at Franken or a compliment... considering the source. He couldn't possibly stick to the party line better than the boys at Powerline.

I think the best way to gain perspective is to remember this:

The top CONSERVATIVE comedian turned pundit thus far has been Dennis Miller. Need I say more?
